In 1993, Andreas Wilfinger founded RINGANA as a company that develops, produces and distributes freshly made organic cosmetics and nutritional supplements, made from natural plant ingredients. His family were hoteliers and in Styria it was common that the firstborn would take over the family business. He was the secondborn though and could do more or less what he wanted to do. Being entrepreneurial and his affinity with his family’s Spa hotel business, the step to cosmetics was pretty obvious. Than, one day his son came back from Kindergarten and was given a tube of toothpaste which he proudly showed his parents and when his father Andreas noticed what the ingredients were, he immediately got his business idea, and RINGANA was born.
Andreas and his wife Ulla Wannemacher, went through hard times because of their high degree of idealism and were in daily contact with the banks. Their ‘problem’ was, that fresh cosmetics only work when they are made freshly and in the beginning they tried to sell the products via the regular retail channels. This failed because of the products’ freshness, they didn’t last long enough to be put on the shops’ shelves. They also experienced happier moments when for instance the hotel guests, who used the products, reacted very enthusiastically and started recommending the products. Without making a business plan but just after some thinking, they discovered a kind of distribution system, where one can make money while talking about the products, without buying and reselling them, just the communicating. This multichannel distribution strategy of RINGANA combines direct selling with distance selling, direct marketing and e-commerce elements.
The RINGANA products are fresh, eco minded, cruelty free, not genetically modified, organic, vegetarian, vegan, environmentally friendly, pure, sustainable, consciously packed, transparent and effective. The cosmetics consist of 100% natural fresh ingredients, free of parabens (preservatives) and PEG’s, emulsifiers, artificial colouring, synthetic fragrances and dyes and are all developed in their own laboratories. Because no preservatives are used, the products have an expiration date that testifies to their absolute freshness. Unopened products can be kept for seven months, opened products about three months, the packaging is accordingly.
By efficient energy usage, RINGANA also tries to keep their environmental carbon footprint as small as possible. For instance, raw materials, which are purchased in Senegal or the Amazon at bio-certified family businesses and communities, are freeze-dried (lyophilisation) and actually ship-shipped to Europe. By freeze-drying, costs are reduced and the environmental footprint lowered by virtue of the fact that it does not require the use of a cold storage facility. All used packaging is biodegradable and recycled as much as is possible.
Some of the awards RINGANA got are the European Business Award 2017, The Dieline Award 2017 for Packaging & Branding Design & Innovation News, the Fast Forward Award 2016 for innovation, the Energy Globe Award for Sustainability, the GREEN BRANDS Austria seal of approval, for the high quality of the ecologically sustainable products.
‘High tech skin care products with artisanal quality’.
The company name RINGANA is derived from the ‘Ringkogel’, the name of an East Styrian hill and local mountain of Hartberg, the city in which RINGANA is based. A 1 kilometre long Celtic circular rampart, part of a Celtic settlement, gave the name to this mountain. The mountain is 789 m. and part of the Masenberg Masif which has an elevation of 1,261 m.
